Choose the basket and plants
Start with the place the basket will hang. Notice the sunlight, exposure to wind and how you will reach it with water. Plants sharing a basket need compatible conditions. A thirsty flowering annual and a succulent that needs a drying interval make an awkward pairing.
Wire baskets need a fitted liner; plastic hanging pots need drainage holes. A larger basket can hold moisture longer, but its watered weight matters. Use the support and fixing instructions, including the surface the fixing is attached to. Move a basket that cannot be maintained safely to an accessible position.
For a short plant list, Iowa State University’s hanging-basket guide separates sun, shade, edible and succulent options. Choose for your conditions first, then combine an upright plant, a fuller plant and trailers if you want a mixed display. Leave room for growth rather than filling every gap with another plant.
Assemble and plant
Gather the basket and its hanging hardware, a suitable liner, container potting mix, plants, a hand trowel and water. Keep the basket stable on a broad pot while planting. A liner should retain the mix while allowing excess water to escape; it is not a sealed reservoir.
- Check the mix. Use a light, well-drained potting mix intended for containers. Read the bag for an existing fertilizer charge before adding any more. Our potting-media ingredient table explains the different roles of coir, bark and mineral ingredients.
- Try the arrangement. Position the nursery pots before planting. Put trailing growth toward the rim and keep taller growth where it will not hide smaller plants. Side planting through a wire-basket liner is optional; choose small plants that fit the openings without damage.
- Fill around the roots. Remove nursery pots, place the root balls and gently fill the gaps with mix. Keep the plant crowns at their previous growing depth. Leave watering space below the rim.
- Soak and drain. Water slowly and thoroughly, allowing excess to escape. Check the full wet weight against the hardware instructions before hanging it. Do not infer a safe load from the dry mix alone.
The RHS basket planting instructions show how to add optional side plants through a liner. Protect tender plants until local frost risk has passed; use your own climate and plant labels rather than a calendar date from another region.
Keep the basket growing
Established baskets can dry quickly as roots fill the mix. Check them daily rather than assuming yesterday’s watering is enough. Hot, windy conditions can increase demand; a shaded position can behave differently. Water the growing medium thoroughly when needed, rather than giving only the leaves a light sprinkle.
If water runs down a gap at the basket’s edge while the root ball stays dry, lower it safely and rewet the mix slowly. Let it drain afterward. Follow fertilizer directions for the plants and the mix you actually used. Some flowering plants benefit from removing faded blooms; others shed their own.
Reopen the checklist after planting to check the care steps. For your next container project, compare self-watering planter designs before choosing a reservoir setup. A lined hanging basket still needs its own moisture checks.
